Are you worried about being judged or criticized by others? Is it hard to slow down and enjoy time with your friends or your partner?

Are you always worried about making mistakes, looking bad, or being embarrassed? Do you look put together on the outside but feel worried on the inside? Do you have trouble focusing during the day, and have trouble falling asleep at night?

Some Anxiety is Normal

Anxiety or stress happens to everyone on a regular basis. A little stress can be a good thing. For example, if you are taking a test a little anxiety can help you focus and increase your critical thinking skills. Then, imagine taking a test and being 100% relaxed. Instead of taking the test, you might find yourself daydreaming or wanting to take a nap.

Everyone has some amount of anxiety. But, for some people, anxiety can get to a point where it is persistent and starts to hold you back.

When anxiety starts to impact you on a daily basis, holds you back from things you usually enjoy or creeps into other areas of your life, you may be developing an anxiety disorder. The good news is you can get unstuck and work through your stress and anxiety.

Anxiety Comes in All Shapes and Forms

Maybe, you have repetitive worries and an overactive mind that is hard to slow down. Or, you might experience social anxiety that is specifically related to being around and interacting with other people. You could feel defeated, exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed, anxious and consumed by achieving perfection.

It might seem like you have everything going for you. You’re successful, but you’re not happy. Your mind always focuses on all your problems. Therefore, you can’t enjoy any of your success. In fact, you are not even sure if you deserve the success you have. At night your mind won’t shut off and you can’t fall asleep. All this worry makes it hard to connect with others. So you feel alone. You wonder if there is something wrong with you.

Anyone Can Experience Anxiety

People from all walks of life experience anxiety, even those who are highly successful. You are able to perform at a high level at your job. And, you are able to maintain a relationship. But inside, you are suffering. You are not getting fulfillment and satisfaction from your work or relationships because you are always worried.

Perhaps you are worried about whether you are doing a good enough job. Or you’re worried about what others think of you. You might even worry because you’re always worrying. Your ability to worry about something seems boundless. Your mind races and your body feels tense. Sometimes, it is hard to breathe and at times it may feel like your heart is going to beat out of your chest.

The good news is that our counselors can help. Anxiety is common and anxiety treatment can help you start to feel better. It is possible to fully enjoy all of the good things in your life that you worked so hard to create.

Therapy Can Be a Powerful Form of Anxiety Treatment

You don’t have to keep living with this constant worry or stress.  It’s possible to live life to the fullest and to feel confident. The good news is that anxiety disorders are very treatable with the support of a trained psychologist and therapy.

At New Connections Counseling Center, our psychologists create a safe, supportive and nonjudgmental environment. We provide space to slow down and tune into the underlying fear that is causing you to feel anxious. Our therapists don’t expect you to know how to do this. We will work with you one step at a time to understand your anxiety.

During anxiety therapy, we will work on identifying your triggers and address the thoughts and situations that cause you anxiety. Then we will work through any difficult emotions to find the deeper reasons behind your anxiety.

Anxiety Treatment Can Help You Get Your Life Back

Anxiety happens when you run away from something that scares you. You may run so fast to avoid the feelings that bother you, that you don’t even know what it is that you are running away from. Maybe you are afraid of disappointing someone important to you. Or you are afraid of losing someone’s love. Sometimes we are afraid of feeling sadness or grief. Yet, with the support of a caring psychologist, you can allow yourself to feel the fear and learn how to overcome what is bothering you. Through this process, you will get what you really need, and find inner peace.

Anxiety treatment helps people from all walks of life to become their best selves.

You can learn to use your fears to help you instead of letting them control you. Imagine living without racing thoughts. Imagine being able to fall asleep with ease. Your relationships will also shift as you become less irritable and stressed. You can live a life filled with calm instead of chaos.

Our Approach to Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety is the most common reason clients come to New Connections Counseling Center. Our approach to treating anxiety is uniquely tailored to meet your needs. To help you overcome your anxiety we use the following evidence-based approaches:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Focuses on the negative thought patterns and behaviors that are causing anxiety. Negative thoughts can cause anxiety and actually make it worse. It’s challenging to feel peaceful when you are stuck in a constant loop of negative thoughts. Cognitive Therapy helps people with anxiety by turning negative thoughts into positive ones. Ultimately, this will improve your mood and help you feel less anxious.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Particularly helpful for handling anxiety. It offers people a way to develop a new relationship with the thoughts that are causing them stress. Pain is a normal and unavoidable part of life. It is normal to feel anxious when you are going through a tough time or dealing with something that brings up uncomfortable feelings. But, the desire to avoid one’s own thoughts and feelings can actually lead to unnecessary suffering. ACT is about letting go of the struggle with difficult thoughts and feelings. This allows you to focus on pursuing a fuller and more purposeful life. ACT can help you learn to be more mindful and let go of your anxiety. ACT helps you get clarity on what really matters to you so that you can commit to living a full, vibrant, and more satisfying life.

Mindfulness

An important tool used to reduce symptoms of anxiety. The practice of mindfulness involves being aware of what is happening in the present moment. This includes being aware of your thoughts, your actions, and your emotions. An important part of mindfulness is being intentional, and nonjudgemental or overreactive to the way you feel. During mindfulness activities, you will learn how to clear your mind and focus on what is going on inside your head. This will help you find clarity and peace.

Exploring Causes of Anxiety & Coping Skills

We also help clients understand the underlying causes of their anxiety and learn new coping skills. Using psychodynamic principles, we help clients become more aware of connections to past experiences that might be contributing to anxious feelings. Understanding the causes of anxiety is helpful for building self-awareness and insight. Then we give them different tools to cope with their unwanted emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
