Hi, I’m Sophie Koch,
Something isn’t working. Maybe you’re stuck in patterns you can’t shake. Maybe you’re carrying something you haven’t been able to name. Maybe your kid is struggling, and you don’t know how to help. You’re in the right place.
Whatever you bring, I won’t flinch at the hard stuff. I’ll bring warmth, curiosity, and a real belief that things can shift, even when they feel completely stuck.
My job is to meet you where you actually are, not where you’re supposed to be. Whether you’re a young person figuring out who you are, or an adult trying to move past what’s kept you stuck, we work with the same steady, curious presence.
Who I Work With
My clinical foundation is in adolescent mental health, where I spent two years in an intensive outpatient program working with anxiety, depression, trauma, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, ADHD, and autism. Those two years reconnected me to my own teen years and reminded me why this work matters so much to me.
That specialty stays central, and it gives me deep familiarity with the same challenges as they show up in adult life. That includes long-standing anxiety or depression, unresolved trauma, ADHD or autism recognized later, and the harder edges of life transitions and relationships.
I’m neurodivergent myself. I know how much it matters to have a space where you don’t have to change who you are to belong. My work is affirming for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ clients.
Want to Know If Sophie Is the Right Therapist for You?
Why I’m a Therapist
When I was 16, I didn’t yet know that life could feel brighter or that there was truly space for me in the world. Therapy showed me otherwise. The wonderful therapists taught me what real healing feels like. The less wonderful ones taught me that finding the right therapist matters.
I became a therapist because I wanted to help create that same kind of space for others, especially teens and young adults who may be struggling to see themselves reflected in the world around them.
I want clients to know it’s okay to exist exactly as they are, and that with compassion, support, and safety, their world can begin to feel brighter too.
My Therapeutic Style
I’m active in sessions. I ask real questions, offer honest observations, and try to make sure we’re actually getting somewhere, not just talking in circles.
I draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), EMDR, and Polyvagal Theory. Talk therapy is the core, and I add sand tray, art, and play when they help, whether the client is 8 or 38.
Above all, I view the therapeutic relationship itself as the most powerful tool for change. Trust, safety, and a little bit of humor go a long way.
My Education and Experience
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where I worked for the Crisis Text Line supporting individuals in acute distress. I later completed my Master of Arts in Professional Clinical Counseling at La Salle University. During graduate training, I interned at Inner Compass Counseling, where I deepened my work with teens, life transitions, and borderline personality disorder.
After returning home to Baltimore, I broadened my clinical experience in community-based and outpatient settings, supporting people facing a wide range of trauma, anxiety, depression
I’ve continued to refine my clinical skills through specialized training in EMDR and Motivational Interviewing, and I’m a Certified Youth Mental Health Specialist.
