For couples therapy, we work with private pay only, as sessions are not submittable to insurance. Learn more here.

          How Insurance Works

We are in-network only with EHP insurance, so clients with Johns Hopkins EHP will have coverage based on their specific plan benefits.

If you have a different insurance provider, you may still be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement. Most insurance companies that provide out-of-network benefits cover between 50%-75% of the cost per session.

Please note that couples therapy is not covered by insurance. Insurance companies only cover treatment for diagnosable conditions, and relationship issues don’t meet that criterion. You can learn more about this on our blog: Will My Insurance Cover Couples Counseling?

          Need Help with Insurance?

The good news is at New Connections we handle the out-of-network paperwork for you. Unlike most therapists and psychologists in the area, we utilize technology to process your payment and electronically submit a request to your insurance company for out-of-network coverage. This saves you time and expedites the process of getting reimbursed.

The way it works is: you will pay upfront for services, and then we submit a claim to the insurance company as a courtesy — so you can be reimbursed for any money owed as part of your insurance plan. Depending on your current health, insurance provider, or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part.

          Have Questions First?

Janel Powell, Care Coordinator at New Connections Counseling Center in Baltimore, MD

Hi! I’m Janel, the Care Coordinator for New Connections Counseling Center.

I’m happy to answer your questions and connect you with the best therapist for you. The easiest way to get started is to schedule a free 15-minute consultation with me. I look forward to assisting you!

Another way to find out what your out-of-network coverage includes is to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card.

We’d recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:

          • Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
          • Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it, and have I met it yet?
          • Do you cover telehealth appointments?
          • What are the “reasonable and customary” rates in the 21211 zip code for the initial evaluation session (CPT code 90791) and for ongoing sessions (CPT code 90834 or 90837)? What amount will I be reimbursed for these services with X therapist?
          • Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
          • Is there pre-authorization required?  If so, what information do you need for this?  Is there a specific form that needs to be filled out?

          Payment

We take payment directly from clients for services provided. We accept cash, personal checks, credit cards, health and flex spending cards. Unlike many other therapy practices, we do not add a service fee for using your credit card.

We are happy to discuss our fees with you in person as well, so please feel free to contact us with specific questions or we can talk about this when we meet.

          Cancellation Policy

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. You will be charged for the full rate of the session if you cancel with less than 24 hours notice. Any no-show appointment will be charged the full rate of the session. Please note: the fee paid for an appointment that wasn’t attended will not be reimbursed by insurance.

We understand that life happens and there are times when you simply cannot make an appointment.  However, a canceled appointment hurts three people: you, your therapist, and another client who could have potentially used your time slot. When a session is canceled without much notice, we are unable to fill this time slot by offering it to another client.

In the case of inclement weather, we have a HIPAA compliant Telehealth system to conduct video sessions. Most insurance companies will reimburse in-network providers for Telehealth sessions but there is no guarantee of this and in the case that they do not, our regular fees would apply.

          Good Faith Estimate

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” for how much your medical care will cost.

          • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
          • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item.
          • You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
          • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
          • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
