Are you looking for fun spring activities to do in Baltimore? Check out our free suggestions and enjoy the warmer days outdoors.

Y’all, this is my third year in Maryland. As my partner and I joke, I’m a Corn Person (Hoosier) by birth but I’m slowly but surely becoming a Crab Person by choice. The mild winters have done nothing to dull my love of spring. If anything, I appreciate them even more because they are a gentle reminder that the Maryland Swamp Weather could arrive any day or week.

So it behooves one to get outside and enjoy things before doing so requires multiple showers and changes of clothes. Unless one wants to feel like a walking swamp themselves. A few years ago I’d have never believed that cabin fever was possible in July. But I digress, there’s plenty of time to think about 90+ degree weather later in the season.

All to say that getting out this time of year can be an incredible form of self-care or a way to connect with the folks most important in your life.

If you’re someone who experiences Seasonal Affective Disorder, this can be doubly valuable. As a thrifty individual myself, I’ve tried to include as many free or low-cost options as possible. Though there are a ton of other great options in the area if you have the time and means, such as the National Aquarium or the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.

Additionally, I’ve tried to include options that help people connect to nature — something that is still entirely possible even in the heart of a major city.

3 Ideas to Explore Baltimore in the Spring

1. Sherwood Gardens

Did y’all know about the giant tulip fields in the middle of Baltimore? I walked by this for a year when working for a local university without realizing it was there. If you’ve ever had the desire to frolic and hang out in a giant field of flowers ( and honestly who hasn’t?) this is a great free option during April and May. Grab a blanket and a book and enjoy this hidden Baltimore gem in early spring.

In Sherwood Gardens, approximately 50,000 tulip bulbs are planted annually along with other spring flowering bulbs. Dogwoods, flowering cherries, wisteria, and magnolias bloom throughout the gardens.

2. Baltimore Museum of Art

During the years I lived in the incredible neighborhood of Charles Village, one of my favorite weekend pastimes was visiting the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Did you know that with the exception of some special exhibits, the museum is always free? Not only can you spend hours viewing and reflecting on amazing works of art indoors, the BMA has an incredible outdoor sculpture garden that is also free of cost to the public. The sculpture garden offers many places to sit and quietly reflect or enjoy the scenery.

3. The Baltimore Farmers’ Market

Starting April 2nd this year, the Baltimore Farmers’ Market is an excellent opportunity to support local growers, artists, and businesses. Spend a morning or afternoon checking out fresh produce, local food, and art — and all the best things Baltimore has to offer.

Y’all, the list could go on forever, but I’ll leave it there. I hope that you’ll find the time and space to spend time outdoors or enjoy many of the great options our city has to offer.
